Saccarapa

After three years of difficult negotiations an agreement was reached in 2016 for the Saccarappa Dam in downtown Westbrook to be removed and fish passage to be installed. The new fish passage will provide sea-run fish the longest continuous stretch of spawning habitat on the Presumpscot.

Scenic Corridor

We are advocating for the joint councils of Gorham, Westbrook and Windham to designate the five-mile section of the river between Malison Falls and Saccarappa Falls as the Mallison/Saccarappa Scenic and Natural River Corridor. This section is unique and remarkable in the Greater Portland metropolitan area as it is almost entirely undeveloped. With few structures visible and little road noise it offers a tranquility of wildness that is difficult to find in the most populated region of the state.

River Talks

Through educational initiatives and free public events, we play a pivotal role in helping our community to embrace and contribute to the long-term biodiversity and sustainability of the Presumpscot River and its shore lands. FOPR is dedicated to reaching out to educate the general public about the treasure in our backyard.

River Floats

Every summer we offer several opportunities for members of the public to paddle the waters of the Presumpscot River in partnership with professional river guides from Portland Paddle and Maine Path & Paddle Guides. Limited spots are available and registration is typically required.
